PRIUS INTRODUCED TO SYDNEY AIRPORT

Sydney Airport has just become the first airport in Australia to implement hybrid technology in its vehicle fleet.

Australia’s largest airport recently took delivery of a new Toyota Prius as part of a wide-reaching effort to increase its friendliness to the environment.

Sydney Airport’s first Toyota Prius will be used on the airport’s tarmac as a safety vehicle.

This is the first hybrid car for the airport and Sydney Airport Corporation plans to have a total of five in its fleet within twelve months.

Sydney Airport Executive Chairman and CEO Max Moore-Wilton believes the Prius offers substantial environmental and financial benefits to the airport.

“The introduction of the hybrid safety vehicles into the fleet will see a reduction in emissions, increased fuel efficiency and overall financial and environmental savings for our safety fleet,” said Mr Moore-Wilton. The new Prius fleet will patrol the airport 24 hours a day, ensuring safe movement across the tarmac and monitor the continuous activity at the facility.

Vic Johnston, Toyota Australia manager for government sales and Prius, says more and more organisations are using Prius for its frugal running costs and environmental benefits.

“The Prius is the only car in Australia to receive a five-star rating on regular unleaded petrol use in the Australian Government’s Green Vehicle Guide.

“Prius is recognised as the cleanest, most economical and most environmentally friendly car in Australia,” said Mr Johnston.

“It is the perfect choice for organisations that are concerned with the environment, such as Sydney Airport Corporation.

“The Prius’ hybrid technology also offers fuel consumption up to five times lower than a four-wheel drive and around three times lower than a large family sedan.”

The Toyota Prius is the reigning European Car of the Year and is currently the world’s best-selling car featuring hybrid technology.

TOYOTA STREETS THE FIELD IN NSW SALES.

June 2005
Toyota’s strength in four-cylinder passenger cars and commercial vehicles helped the company stretch its lead in New South Wales motor vehicle sales in May.

According to figures released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, Toyota sold 5534 vehicles in NSW last month – 887 ahead of its nearest competitor.

The result increases the company’s year-to-date sales lead in NSW to 3240 and gives it a 20.3 per cent share of the market.

Camry four-cylinder easily won the Medium car segment with 614 sales – an increase of 24.8 per cent over the same month last year.

Corolla dominated the Small car class with 1391 sales – an increase of 7.9 per cent compared to the month of May 2004.

“It seems Toyota is benefiting from the trend towards more compact or fuel-efficient cars in New South Wales as Sydney residents in particular deal with sharply rising fuel prices and increased traffic and parking congestion,” said Toyota’s regional manager – eastern region, David Stone.

Other star performers for Toyota were its newly launched light commercial vehicles – HiLux and HiAce.

New generation HiLux 4x4 won its segment with 463 sales – an increase of 18.4 per cent over May 2004.

The first all-new HiAce Van model in 15 years also found immediate acceptance with buyers, posting a 46.6 per cent month-on-month increase to easily top the Van segment.

The performance of HiLux and HiAce made Toyota the number one brand in the Light Truck market.

“The market response to these new models has been overwhelmingly positive and we would have done even better with HiLux if it wasn’t for supply constraints,” said Mr Stone.

Toyota continues to dominate the NSW market for SUVs, winning the SUV Large segment with LandCruiser wagon and coming second in SUV Compact with RAV4.

In addition, the combined sales of Prado and Kluger gave Toyota the largest share (36.3 per cent) of the booming SUV Medium segment – one of the fastest-growing areas of the motor vehicle market.

So far this year one in four of all SUVs sold in NSW has been a Toyota.
